After years of data-driven analysis, Google discovered the key to great teamwork is being nice. The same can be said for communities--our dance communities and the communities in which we live and play. As we strive to achieve our personal best, it's easy to get caught up in the here and now with little regard for our dance mates or neighbors. I recall when I was five years old and getting ready for my first "big" ballet performance, the unthinkable happened. One of my fellow ballerinas, who was equally excited to perform on the big stage, tripped and landed on a pencil, which became lodged in her leg. Ouch! All the ballerinas were horrified but the show had to go on. While we finished getting ready, our friend was rushed to a nearby emergency clinic. Thankfully she was able to return to the performance hall to see our last dance. As we took our bows and accepted flowers from our adoring fans (parents), our injured ballerina friend sat on her father's lap with an understandably sad face. My mother quietly asked if I wanted to give my rose to my friend. I can't remember if I was happy at the thought of giving my rose away at the time, but in the end I was glad I did. I'll never forget my friend's smile....or the lesson in kindness and compassion. As Google's study aptly points out, nice matters. In everything we say and do. Weight loss? Muscle gain? Out with the old, in with the new? There are countless ways to approach the new year. Over the holidays, my husband and I enjoyed quiet time with family and friends. One of our highlights was being part of a meditation that was guided by a dear family friend, who we lovingly refer to as our spiritual muse. What a gift to have "Auntie Etch" in our lives. On this particular night, we were reminded how we're all connected and the importance of having a servant's heart. I love the idea of a servant's heart. But how do you keep yourself from being overwhelmed? Or broke? The world has so many needs. Exercising a servant's heart, I've learned, doesn't have to be extravagant and can easily be carried out in our day-to-day interactions with neighbors, friends, and with people whom we come in contact. A smile, a kind word, a helpful hand--these are some of the basic ingredients. As a dancer, I've learned that I can't focus on just one aspect of my life....physical movement, for example...while neglecting other important areas (e.g., healthy diet, getting enough down time and sleep). To operate at my optimal best requires approaching wellness in a comprehensive way that includes body, mind and spirit. Sharing the gift of super-good, positive energy throughout the year with people near and far is an important part of a good wellness regime--I will do my best to incorporate this into my daily workout. Carpe Annum! Let's seize the year and truly make it count. ~ Arianne M.
I was raised believing in Santa Claus and Christkind (a German tradition)...and lots of gifts on Christmas morning. What a magical time! Christmas continues to be a special holiday for my family and me, but not because of the presents we expect to receive on Christmas morning. We no longer exchange gifts, at least not the tangible kind. As adults, we have a better grasp on the true meaning of Christmas....and so we give of ourselves. We share experiences with one another and with people in our community. We also do a better job of sharing our blessings, which I admittedly take for granted from time to time.
One of my fondest Christmas memories is from early childhood. At the time, my mother was helping homeless people write resumes and find jobs. Through these brave women and men, we learned about the plight of homeless families. It wasn't long before Mom started a clothes drive in the apartment complex where we lived. Initially the big black plastic bin, which she purchased in the hope of collecting gently worn winter clothing, stayed empty. That is, until Mom, who had started taking guitar lessons, wrote a poem, which she turned into a song about a little homeless girl. She called it, "Dearest Mr. Santa Claus." We made a flyer, on which we glued the text of the poem and an image from a Christmas card of a little girl holding a teddy bear looking up in the sky at Santa and his sleigh. After we finished our arts-and-crafts project, we taped the flyer next to the big black bin and the sign soliciting clothes donations for homeless families. And then something magical happened. The bin, which for weeks had remained empty, began to overflow, as did my brother's and my joy whenever we helped my mother transport warm, beautiful clothes to the local homeless shelter. I can't remember the gifts that were under the Christmas tree for my brother and me that year, but I do remember the Dearest Mr. Santa Claus song and the magic that it brought to us and our community. In this spirit, I would like to share my love for dance with my beautiful dance community. During the month of December, Dance Artistry will give away 2 free dance sessions every week. If you know of someone who could use a lift--physically or mentally-- or who might enjoy learning how to dance but perhaps doesn't have the means to do so,...whatever the reason....please send an email to me at arianne@artistry.dance with the following information: your name, the name of the person you're nominating and why you think he/she should be selected.
